Making the Grade
High School Graduation Requirements (2015-2016)
You are in high school and, if you haven’t started already, it is time to think about your life after high school. Whether it’s off to college or off to a career school, entering a service academy, or taking on that great job, it all starts with making and maintaining good grades. You should know the courses you have been assigned to and have taken and how many more you need to complete your graduation requirements. That’s because college and career school admission officers, employers, and service academy officers want to know how better to assist you in building upon your prerequisite learning foundation, which resulted in you being able to graduate high school and, subsequently, in becoming eligible for the next steps.
To help you create a more cohesive foundation prior to meeting your many postsecondary college and/or career demands, take at least five MESS (math, English, social studies, science) area academic classes every semester. Start with the basics, and then move on to challenging yourself in advanced courses like AP, IB, and Honors’ classes. Let’s take a look at the Baltimore City Public Schools’ High School Graduation Requirements for 2015-16. This chart explains exactly which, as well as how many, courses are necessary to pass to be successfully promoted from grade to grade and, thus, may eventually lead to you to earning your high school diploma.
